Nimotop (Nimodipine)
General information
Nimotop is called a calcium channel blocker. It works by relaxing narrowed blood vessels in the brain near the area of bleeding so blood can flow more easily. This effect reduces brain damage. Nimotop is used to prevent brain damage caused by reduced blood flow to the brain resulting from aneurysm, a dilated or ruptured blood vessel in the brain. This medication may also be used to decrease problems due to stroke.
Directions
Take Nimotop exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Take each dose with a full glass of water. Take it on an empty stomach, one hour before or two hours after meals. Nimotop is usually started as soon as possible after the start of bleeding in the brain, usually within 4 days. Do not take antacids for 2 hours before or after taking the drug.
Precautions
Before taking Nimotop you should talk with your doctor if you have liver disease, low blood pressure, high blood pressure, heart problems, slow heart rate, congestive heart failure, heart attack. This drug may make you dizzy. Do not drive or perform tasks that require alertness. Limit alcoholic beverages. Alcohol may cause low blood pressure, drowsiness, or dizziness. Avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice. Grapefruit can increase the amount of certain medications in your bloodstream.
Contraindications
You should not take Nimotop if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, are allergic to the medicine.
Possible side effect
Get emergency medical help if you have dizziness, lightheadedness, flushing, or swelling ankles or feet, slow or fast heartbeat, fainting, stomach bloating, abdominal pain, vision changes, trouble breathing, swelling of the face, tongue, throat, itching. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor.
Drug interactions
Tell your doctor about all other medications you use, especially: beta blockers (betaxolol, propranolol, metoprolol), ACE inhibitors (captopril, enalapril, fosinopril, lisinopril), calcium channel blockers (verapamil, nifedipine, diltiazem, felodipine). Interaction between two medications does not always mean that you must stop taking one of them. Tell your doctor or prescriber about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking.
Missed dose
Take the missed dose as soon as possible. Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Don't take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Overdose
If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once. The overdose symptoms are weakness, chest pain, fainting, dizziness, slurred speech, confusion, fast or slow heartbeat.
Storage
Store the medicine at room temperature between 59-86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Do not store the drugs in the bathroom. Keep all drugs away from reach of children and pets.
